chemistry - matter

Chemistry is the study of matter and its properties.

Matter is anything that has mass and takes up space.

Properties of Matter:
• Physical properties → how a substance appears without changing it into a different matter. eg. mass, boiling / melting point, shape, colour, density.
• Chemical properties → how a substance reacts with another substance. eg. combustible, reacts with O2, H2O, etc.
• Qualitative → can be described in words, but not measured or expressed numerically.
• Quantitative → can be measured and expressed numerically.

Classifying Matter and its changes:
• Physical changes → a change that does not alter the composition of matter.
• Chemical changes → the type of change that occurs when elements and/or compounds interact with each other to form different substances with different properties; involves the rearrangement of atoms.

Classifying Matter:

*not too sure if colloids are under homogenous or heterogenous.

States of Matter:

Plasma are found in the sun.
